Introduction to Forensic Psychology
What do they do?
They cover the areas where psychology and forensics can meet. Commonly known for evaluating and treating charged or convicted criminals. They can often testify in court, work with lawyers or assist police officers. They can work to find motivations behind a crime committed, do physiological assignments and do research into cases.
Jobs opportunities in the field
1. Correctional Counselor
In this field you will have the opportunity to work with inmates and ex-offenders. This would include offering counseling to convicts, and working with case workers or other professionals in the facility. They provide an inside look into the criminals minds and give insight to the court/parole officers.
2. Police Consultant
They can help with educating police officers on how to handle different situations with criminals/victims and in the community. Also can assist with personal problems officers might face involving their mental state around their line of work.
3. Professional Clinical Counselor
They can include a number of specific fields like domestic violence shelters, addiction treatments, and other private practices.
4. Victim Advocates
Works with victims or survivors of a trauma. They can advocate for legal rights in court, or helping the victim through the legal process. They often attend victims hearing hearings to support them during the process. They can work for a number of different kinds of organizations.
